• Geboren 1935 in Karlsruhe/Baden, Abitur in Karlsruhe 1954.


• 1954-1960 Studium der Anglistik, Romanistik, Germanistik und Phonetik an den Universitäten Heidelberg, Besançon/Frankreich und Edinburgh/Schottland.


• 1960 Staatsexamen für das Lehramt an Gymnasien in Heidelberg.


• 1961 Diplom in Phonetik an der Universität Edinburgh.


• 1964 Promotion an der Universität Edinburgh mit einer Dissertation zur englischen Aussprache in Schottland: Aspects of the History of English Pronunciation in Scotland"


• 1968 Habilitation an der Universität Bonn mit der Arbeit Generative Phonologie des Deutschen und des Englischen (AIPUK 9 (1977)); Venia legendi für Phonetik und Kommunikationsforschung.


• 1961-1966 Lecturer am Institut für Phonetik der Universität Edinburgh.


• 1966-1971 Assistent, Dozent, Professor am Institut für Kommunikationsforschung und Phonetik der Universität Bonn.


• 1971 Ruf auf den neu eingerichteten Lehrstuhl für Phonetik in der Philosophischen Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) zu Kiel; im selben Jahr Gründung eines eigenständigen Instituts für Phonetik.


• Direktor dieses Instituts, über meine Emeritierung im Oktober 2000 hinaus, bis zur Wiederbesetzung des Lehrstuhls am 1. Januar 2002.


• Abschiedsvorlesung "Upstairs and Downstairs" - Reflexionen über dreißig Jahre 'Phonetik und digitale Sprachverarbeitung' an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität  (pdf ; zip-wav), 15. Februar 2002.

• Auf meinen Antrag hin wurde 1986 mit Beschluss durch die Philosophische Fakultät und durch den Senat der CAU der Institutsname erweitert zu "Phonetik und digitale Sprachverarbeitung", um der modernen interdisziplinären methodischen Orientierung der Phonetik Rechnung zu tragen, ohne die enge Bindung an die sprachlichen Disziplinen aufzugeben.


• In zahlreichen DFG-geförderten Forschungsprojekten habe ich von 1971 bis 2006 zusammen mit Studenten, Doktoranden und Mitarbeitern Untersuchungen zu lautlichen und prosodischen Strukturen im Hoch- und Niederdeutschen, Englischen und Französischen durchgeführt.


• Im Rahmen von F&E Kooperationsverträgen mit dem Department of Speech Communication and Music Acoustics der Technischen Hochschule Stockholm und der Firma Infovox/Stockholm habe ich 1987-1990 Module zur automatischen Umsetzung deutscher geschriebener Texte in Sprachschall weiter entwickelt.


• Ich war Herausgeber der Institutsreihe Arbeitsberichte des Instituts für Phonetik der Universität Kiel (AIPUK), Bände 1 - 35a (1973 - 2005).


• Im Rahmen der vom Bundesforschungsministerium 1990 - 1996 geförderten Projekte PHONDAT und VERBMOBIL wurde unter meiner Leitung eine umfangreiche akustische Datenbasis zur deutschen Lese- und Spontansprache erhoben, ein rechnerverarbeitbares segmentelles und prosodisches Notationssystem für die Etikettierung der Daten entwickelt und in eine Datenbank überführt (The Kiel Corpus of Read/Spontaneous Speech, CD-ROMs#1-4).


• Am 13. Juni 1996 feierte das Institut den 25. Jahrestag seiner Gründung mit einer Jubiläumsveranstaltung in der Philosophischen Fakultät der Christian-Albrechts-Universität

• Das Institut hat unter meiner Führung vier internationale Konferenzen ausgerichtet:
  
  
  • 1979 ein interdisziplinäres Kolloquium "Time in the Production and Perception of Speech" mit Unterstützung durch die DFG (AIPUK 12 (1979)),
  
  
  • 1989, mit Unterstützung durch das Land Schleswig-Holstein, eine Tagung der International Phonetic Association (IPA) zur Neukodifizierung der internationalen Lautschrift; die Tagung ist als "Kiel Convention" bekannt, und ein Fontsatz in der Textverarbeitung heißt IPAKiel,
  
  
  • 1996, aus Anlass des 25-järigen Bestehens des IPDS, ein Symposium "Sound Patterns of Connected Speech - Descriptions, Models and Explanations", mit Unterstützung durch die DFG und das Land Schleswig-Holstein (AIPUK 31 (1996)).
  
  
  • 2000, mit Unterstützung durch die DFG sowie das Land Schleswig-Holstein und unter dem Dach der IPA, "Patterns of Speech Sounds in Unscripted Communication: Production - Perception - Phonology" (Journal of the International Phonetic Association 31(1), 2001).


• Ich bin Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Phonetica, war Mitglied des Council of the International Phonetic Association 1985 - 2011und Präsident der IPA 1999 - 2003 sowie Präsident des Permanent Council for the Organization of Congresses of Phonetic Sciences 1999 - 2007.

Meine zentralen Forschungsgebiete umfassen

• lautliche Reduktion und Verstärkung auf der Äußerungsebene, unter Einbeziehung der Spontansprache, Untersuchungsschwerpunkt Deutsch, aber auch Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch, Russisch


• Prosodie und Intonation des Deutschen, Entwicklung des Kieler Intonationsmodells (KIM) und der prosodischen Etikettierung (PROLAB) auf der Grundlage dieses Modells


• Implementation dieses Modells in der deutschen Sprachsynthese ('text-to-speech')

• 1971 appointment to the newly created Chair of Phonetics in the Faculty of Arts of Christian-Albrechts-University at Kiel, and to the directorship of an independent Department of Phonetics, subsequently founded in the same year.


• Director of this Department until the Chair was refilled on 1 January 2002, after my becoming an emeritus professor in October 2000.

• Upon my application, and with the approval of the Faculty of Arts and the Senate of Kiel University, the name of the Institute was expanded to "Phonetics and Digital Speech Processing" in 1986, to take account of the modern interdisciplinary methodological orientation of phonetics, without foregoing the close links with the linguistic disciplines.


• Between 1971 and 2006, I carried out a large number of German Research Council (DFG) funded projects into segmental and prosodic sound structures of High and Low German, English, and French, forming various teams with students, PhD candidates, and research staff.


• In cooperation with the Department of Speech Communication and Music Acoustics of KTH Stockholm and the company Infovox/Stockholm I carried out an R&D project on modules of automatic German text-to-speech synthesis.


• I was the Editor of the Institute Work-in-Progress series Arbeitsberichte des Instituts für Phonetik der Universität Kiel (AIPUK), volumes 1 - 35a (1973 - 2005).


• Within the projects PHONDAT and VERBMOBIL, which were funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology between 1990 - 1996, I supervised the setting up of a large acoustic database of German read and spontaneous speech, and the development of a segmental and prosodic notation system to label the database and to transfer it into a structured data bank for computer processing (The Kiel Corpus of Read/Spontaneous Speech, CD-ROMs#1-4.

• Under my directorship, the Department hosted four international conferences:
  
  
  • in 1979, an interdisciplinary colloquium "Time in the Production and Perception of Speech", with funding from the German Research Council (DFG) (AIPUK 12 (1979)),
  
  
  • in 1989, a meeting of the International Phonetic Association (IPA), with funding from the Schleswig-Holstein government, to revise the international phonetic alphabet; the meeting has come to be known as the "Kiel Convention", and a set of phonetic fonts as IPAKiel,
  
  
  • in 1996, to mark the Department's 25th anniversary, a symposium on "Sound Patterns of Connected Speech - Descriptions,Models and Explanations", with funding from the DFG and the Schleswig-Holstein government, (AIPUK 31 (1996)),
  
  
  • an International Symposium "Patterns of Speech Sounds in Unscripted Communication: Production - Perception - Phonology", held at Akademie Sankelmark/Flensburg in 2000, under the auspices of the IPA and with funding from the DFG and the Schleswig-Holstein government (Journal of the International Phonetic Association 31(1), 2001).


• I am the Editor of Phonetica, was a member of the Council of the International Phonetic Association 1985 - 2011 and its President 1999 - 2003, as well as the President of the Permanent Council for the Organization of Congresses of Phonetic Sciences 1999 - 2007.

• sound reduction and elaboration at the phrase level, including spontaneous speech, focus on German, but also including English, French, Italian, Russian,


• prosody and intonation of German, development of the Kiel Intonation Model (KIM) and of prosodic labelling (PROLAB) on the basis of this model,


• implementation of this model in German text-to-speech synthesis,


• speech perception,


• contrastive phonetics and phonology, typology and universals of sound processes at the phrase level,


• phonetic description of German at all levels.
