Die Arbeit an diesem Projekt, das die Wahrnehmung post-lexikalischer Assimilationen in verschiedenen Sprachen vergleichend untersucht, findet am "Laboratoire Parole & Langage" an der Universität der Provence in Aix-en-Provence statt.
• Juli-September 2009: Forschungsaufenthalt am Department of Psychology der Universität York (UK) auf Basis eines "small research grant" der British Academy zu "vowel differences in the context of English sibilant assimilation", in Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Gareth Gaskell und Dr. Richard Ogden.

Meine Forschungsgebiete und -interessen umfassen

• Wahrnehmung der Sprechmelodie im Deutschen und anderen Sprachen. Hierbei sind die folgenden Fragestellungen von besonderem Interesse:
  - Wie sind die funktionalen Komponenten der Sprechmelodie zu konzeptualisieren?
  - Wie sind sie kodiert? Hierbei steht der Einfluss des Kontextes sowie das Zusammenwirken melodischer und segmenteller Ereignisse im Vordergrund.
  - Die Trennung von Mikro- und Makroprosodie und deren Reintegration in die Wahrnehmung kommunikativer Kategorien.
  
• Wahrnehmung von Akzent, Rhythmus und Phrasierung, vor allem unter den folgenden Gesichtspunkten:
  - melodische und nicht-melodische Formen des Akzentes und ihre Unterschiede in Funktion und Bedeutung.
  - Die "konstruktive" Komponente bei der Wahrnehmung von Akzent, Rhythmus und Phrasierung (in Form signalexterner interpretativer Wahrnehmungsprozesse).
• Prosodische Modelle und Phonologien; speziell die weitere Entwicklung des Kieler Intonationsmodells (KIM) und dessen prosodischen Etikettiersystems PROLAB.
• Produktion und Wahrnehmung „verschliffener“ (reduzierter) Sprache mit sprachübergreifender Perspektive auf folgenden Fragen:
  - Reduktion oder artikulatorische Reorganisation: Ist der Informationsgehalt verschliffener Sprache wirklich geringer (wie es durch den Begriff „reduziert“ impliziert wird)? Welche phonetischen Details sind resistent gegen Elisionen oder Assimilationen von Lauten?
  - Welche artikulatorischen und kognitiven Gesetzmäßigkeiten oder Beschränkungen liegen der Produktion verschliffener Sprache zugrunde?
  - Inwieweit ist die Dekodierung von verschliffener Sprache eine Rekonstruktion und welche Rolle spielen sprachuniverselle und sprachspezifische Prozesse hierbei?
• Wahrnehmung und kognitive Verarbeitung von (sprachlichen) Reizen, z.B. vor dem Hintergrund von Parallelen in der Verarbeitung visueller und auditiver Signale; der Status der Kategorialen (Sprach-)Wahrnehmung, die Wahrnehmung von Assimilationen über Sprachen hinweg.
• Die funktionale Anatomie und Physiologie des Kehlkopfes, einschließlich der Prozesse zur Erzeugung und Modifikation von Stimmlippenschwingungen.

Research areas and interests comprise

• Perception of speech melody in German and other languages. The following questions are of special interest:
  - What are the functional components of speech melody?
  - How are they coded with regard to different contexts and interactions between melodic and segmental events?
  - The separation of micro- and macroprosody and their reintegration into the perception of communicative categories.
  
• Perception of accent, speech rhythm, and phrasing, especially from the following points of view:
  - Melodic and non-melodic forms of accent and their functional differences.
  - The "constructive" component (i.e. signal external cognitive processes) in the perception of accent, speech rhythm, and phrasing.
• Prosodic models and phonologies, in particular the (further) development of the Kiel Intonation Model (KIM) and its labelling system PROLAB.
• Production and perception of “slurred” (reduced) speech with a cross-linguistic scope on the following questions:
  - Reduction vs. articulatory reorganization: Is the information value of slurred speech actually lower (as is implied by the term “reduced”)? Which phonetic details persist in the elision or assimilation of sounds or entire strings of sounds?
  - Which articulatory or cognitive regularities or constraints determine the production of reduced speech?
  - To what extent is the decoding of reduced speech a reconstruction (of sounds), and how much is due to language-universal and language-specific processes?
• Perception and cognitive processing of (speech) stimuli; e.g., parallels between auditive and visual processing, the status of categorical perception, cross-linguistic perception of assimilation.
• Functional anatomy and physiology of the larynx; generation and modification of vocal fold vibrations.
